What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep-related breathing disorder that is characterized by frequent periods of interrupted breathing while you sleep. OSA occurs when the airway collapses, thus blocking air from reaching your brain. As the blood oxygen level drops, your brain signals your body to abruptly wake up, which causes you to wake up gasping for air. In severe cases, these episodes of interrupted breathing, or apneas, can occur as many as 30-40 times per hour.

Left untreated, OSA can increase your risk of health problems, including cardiovascular disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, and more.

Signs and symptoms of OSA include:

  • Loud snoring
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Observed apneas (episodes of interrupted breathing)
  • Gasping for air or choking during sleep
  • Waking up with dry mouth
  • Morning headaches or frequent migraines
  • Difficulty concentrating or focusing
  • Irritability

How Do You Treat Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

Continuous positive air pressure, or CPAP, therapy is considered the gold standard therapy for OSA. It is an unobtrusive treatment with almost immediate results. In sleep therapy, a CPAP machine delivers positive airflow to the patient via a CPAP mask. The pressure is calibrated to keep the airway open and thus prevent apnea episodes.

Please note: A prescription from a physician is needed to order a CPAP machine.

The nebulizer compressor is a small air pump to which the nebulizer circuit tubing is attached so that the pressure produced from the pump travels through the tubing to the nebulizer cup and the medication in the cup is transformed into a fine mist. The patient inhales the medication into the lungs for the maximum therapeutic effect.

Accessories include mouthpieces, nebulizer cups, and filters.
